Speaker Biographies

Dr. Byun’s primary research focuses on millimeter-wave antennas and metasurfaces with a strong emphasis on advancing adaptive beamforming techniques for diverse applications, including 5G/6G communication, satellite technology, defense systems, and radars. Dr. Byun’s distinguished contributions have been pivotal in advancing overall beamforming performance, achieved through a unique integration of antenna engineering and signal processing insights. His current research pursuits extend to display-integrated antennas, antenna-in-package (AiP), and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to derive innovations for future wireless communication systems.

Dr. Gu is an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques (T-MTT), IEEE Journal of Electromagnetics, RF and Microwaves in Medicine and Biology (J-ERM), IET Microwave, Antenna & Propagation (MAP) and Microwave and Optical Technology Letters (MOTL). He was an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems (TBioCAS) 2019-2021 and International Journal of Electronics and Communications 2014-2016. He is a member of the Technical Committee of IEEE MTT-S TC28. He received 7 times' best/excellent paper awards from IEEE conferences as an author/co-author. He received the IEEE Sensors Council Early Career Technical Achievement Award in 2019, the Okawa Foundation Research Grant in 2019, IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) Graduate Fellowship in 2013, Texas Tech Horn Professors Graduate Achievement Award in 2013, and the 2012 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad. He is an active reviewer for more than 20 journals and conferences including IEEE T-MTT, T-AP, T-BME, T-CAS I/II, T-IM, MWCL, AWPL, etc. Since 2018, he has been serving as a TPRC member for IEEE International Microwave Symposium (IMS).Changzhan Gu is an Associate Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Before SJTU, he was an RF/Hardware Engineer with Google (Mountain View, CA), where he was involved with research and development of the radar gesture sensing technology (Project Soli) and translating it into consumer products such as Pixel phone. While at Google, he also worked on wireless last-mile technologies delivering high-speed internet to homes. Before Google, he worked briefly in semiconductor industry at Marvell (Santa Clara, CA) and MaxLinear (Irvine, CA) on wireless connectivity silicon solutions.

Shahid Mumtaz is an Innovative strategist with strong business acumen and passion for innovation, driving concepts, research, standards, prototypes, and products from conception to market. Demonstrated ability to establish cross-departmental, multidisciplinary, multi-site, and multi-cultural collaborative teams and programs. Shahid Mumtaz has more than 15 years of wireless industry/academic experience. Shahid Mumtaz received his Master's and PhD degrees in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden, and the University of Aveiro, Portugal, in 2006 and 2011, respectively. Shahid Mumtaz is a full professor at Nottingham Trent University (NTU), UK, and a Board member of the SWFIT (Smart Wireless Innovation Facility) Center at NTU.

Özlem Özgün is currently a full professor in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering department of Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey. She received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey in 1998 and 2000, respectively, and her Ph.D. degree from Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey in 2007, all in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. She served as a postdoctoral researcher at Electromagnetic Communication Lab, Penn State University, USA (2007-2008). She previously worked at TUBITAK Iltaren (2000-2004), Aselsan Inc. (2004-2005), METU (2008-2012), and TED University (2012-2015) before joining Hacettepe University. Her research interests include various topics in computational electromagnetics and radiowave propagation, including electromagnetic radiation and scattering, numerical methods, domain decomposition methods, transformation electromagnetics, stochastic electromagnetic problems and optimization techniques. She has authored over 130 refereed publications in international journals, book (MATLAB-based Finite Element Programming in Electromagnetic Modeling, CRC Press, 2018), book chapters and conference proceedings.

Bing Zhang is a Professor at the College of Electronics and Information Engineering, Chengdu, China. Dr. Zhang received the Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2013. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, from 2013 to 2016. He was a Research Fellow at the National University of Singapore from 2016 to 2017. He joined Sichuan University as a Professor in 2017. He was a Visiting Student at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, France, in May 2012, and a Visiting Scientist at IMT Atlantique, Brest, France, in November 2014 and April 2015. Dr. Zhang is a Senior Member of IEEE, a member of the IEEE C-RFID Technical Committee on Additively Manufacturing Electronic Systems, and the Advisor of the IEEE Sichuan University IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Branch Chapter in the Chengdu Section. He was the recipient of the URSI Young Scientist Award in 2013 and the APMC Prize in Antennas in 2019. His research interests include 3D-printed antennas, antenna-in-package (AiP), antenna-on-chip (AoC), electrically small antennas, gap waveguides, packaging of monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMIC), and co-design of active and passive microwave components. He is the author of two invited papers in the Proceedings of the IEEE on the topic of 3D-printed antennas and microwave components in 2017 and 2024.

Professor Satish Kumar Sharma received the B. Tech. degree from Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology, Sultanpur, and the Ph.D. degree from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, both in Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1991 and 1997, respectively, both in Electronics Engineering. He holds one US Patent, one Canadian Patent, and two patent disclosures are in process. Additionally, he has published and presented more than 275 research papers in refereed journals and at international conferences/symposia, as well as several unrefereed presentations. He has coedited three volumes of “Handbook of Reflector Antennas and Feed Systems”, published in May/June 2013 by Artech House, USA and UK. He has also published a co-authored book, “Multifunctional Antennas and Arrays for Wireless Communication Systems”, IEEE-Press/Wiley-InterScience, USA (April 2021). At SDSU, he has developed the Antenna Measurement Laboratory as part of the Antenna and Microwave Laboratory (AML), which includes antenna design and measurement facilities up to W-band. He is currently advising graduate students (Ph.D. and MS) on their thesis research, in addition to mentoring the funded Postdoctoral Fellows and visiting Ph.D. & MS researchers, visiting professors, adjunct faculty members, and undergraduate research students. He has graduated and mentored more than 115 BS/MS/Ph.D. students and visiting scholars. His research interests are primarily in antenna theory and design, microwave passive devices, and novel electromagnetic materials. He received NSF's prestigious CAREER award in the year 2009. He received the IEEE AP-Society’s prestigious Harold A. Wheeler Prize Paper Award in 2015 for a co-authored paper with his Ph. D. student and a collaborator from UCSD. He also received the Young Scientist Award from URSI Commission B, Field & Waves, at the URSI Triennial International Symposium on Electromagnetic Theory in Pisa, Italy, in 2004. He served as an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation journal for two terms. He served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters (AWPL) from March 2017 to March 2023.

Mohamed M. Fahmi (S’05–M’09-SM’23) received B.Sc. (with Honors) in Electronics Engineering from Mansoura University, Egypt in 1999. The MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Howard University, Washington DC, USA in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA in 2007. He worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland from January to July 2008, and as a post-doctoral fellow at the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada from September 2008 to January 2012. He worked as a microwave Engineer, Senior Microwave Engineer and as a Manager of Passive Component Engineering at Nanowave Technologies Inc. in Etobicoke, Canada from February 2012 to February 2017. He worked as a Senior System Engineer, Radar Specialist at General Dynamics Mission Systems Canada, in Ottawa, Canada from February 2017 to February 2018. In February 2018 he joined Defence Research and Development Canada as a Group Leader, Radar Technology and Engineering. Dr. Fahmi is an adjunct Associate Professor at department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. His current research interests include CAD of microwave devices and systems.

Haq Nawaz (Senior Member, IEEE) received the B.Sc. degree (Hons.) in electrical engineering and the master’s degree in telecommunication engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Taxila, Pakistan, in 2005 and 2012, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering (RF and antenna design) from Sabancı University, Istanbul, Türkiye, in January 2017.,He is currently a Lecturer at the Marine Engineering Department, Military Technological College, Muscat, Oman. Before this, he was the Associate Professor in electrical engineering with the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, from May 2021 to February 2024. From January 2022 to March 2023, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Antenna Research Group, University of Colorado at Boulder, Boulder, CO, USA. From January 2017 to June 2018, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS), Sabanci University. From November 2009 to February 2013 and from June 2018 to April 2021, he was a Lecturer and an Assistant Professor with the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Taxila, Sub-Campus Chakwal. From 2006 to 2009, he was a RF Design Engineer with the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), Pakistan. He has authored more than 30 research articles published in renowned international journals in addition to one patent in U.S. patent and trademark office and several papers in IEEE conferences. His research interests include full duplex antenna design, RF circuits design and measurements for radar and satellite systems, beam-switched and phased scanning array antenna design, and indoor positioning systems design.,Dr. Nawaz is a member of the International Association of Engineers (IAENG), a member of the International Association of Electrical, Electronic and Energy Engineering (IAEEEE), and a Professional Engineer registered with Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC).
